Torch Working glass, also known as Lampworking, is an ancient art which is believed to trace its roots back to the 5th century B.C. Early Torch Workers used a fire pit to melt and form the glass. Later, artists began using oil lamps, leading to the term Lampworking. Today’s glass artists use torches fueled with an oxygen / gas mixture, though many of the traditional methods developed over a fire pit are still used today.
Torch Workers use gravity, temperature control, and timing to shape molten glass. Various colors and types of glass are used to create unique designs. Different techniques can also be applied to the surface of the glass to achieve distintictive textures and patterns. The only real limit to glass design is the Torch Worker’s imagination.
